SKODA HAS ANNOUNCED that its new model offensive will start with the Rapid family hatchback, which has been unveiled in Beijing.
Until now, the compact hatchback/saloon had only been known as the MissionL Concept but Skoda revealed today that the car will be sold under the name Rapid.
Skoda CEO Winfried Vahland said, “As part of its growth strategy, ŠKODA has initiated the largest model offensive in its corporate history and will bring a new vehicle to market every six months on average in the years ahead. The Rapid is our next new model. It has a central importance for our growth and will provide us with a strong tailwind on international markets.”
Skoda says the Rapid will sit between the Fabia and Octavia in the line-up, meaning that it will take on rivals like the Ford Focus, VW Golf and Vauxhall Astra, although offering a different body style than those more traditional family hatchbacks and potentially undercutting them on price too.
This will allow the Octavia to move slightly further upmarket, into the Ford Mondeo category and will give Skoda a much broader and better defined range of cars.
The Rapid will go on sale in Europe before the end of the year and in China in 2013.
