VW HAS RELEASED the first details of the new 295bhp Golf R.
Following on from the previous generation Golf R, and the R32 before that, the new car features four-wheel-drive and sits at the top of the performance Golf tree where it will take on the likes of the Mercedes A45 AMG and BMW M135i.
The Golf R still uses basically the same 2.o-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the GTI, but tuning including modified cylinder head, pistons and turbocharger boosts power from 227bhp to 295bhp.
Thanks to the latest iteration of VW’s 4MOTION four-sheel-drive system and the optional six-speed DSG paddle-shift gearbox, the R will hit 62mph in 4.9 seconds. When equipped with the manual gearbox, the 0-62mph sprint takes 5.3 seconds.
Further mechanical changes include specially tuned springs and dampers which give a further 5mm drop in ride height over the GTI, optional Adaptive Chassis Control and progressive steering which reduces the number of turns lock to lock from 2.75 to 2.1, improving dynamics.
Cosmetic changes are a new front bumper with larger air inlets, body-colour side sills, 18-inch alloy wheels, smoked LED tail lights, rear diffuser, quad exhaust pipes and R badging.
