RENAULT HAS ANNOUNCED a harder and faster Clio RS; the Trophy 220.
After the current generation Clio Renaultsport received a lukewarm reception from the motoring press, Renault has announced the more hardcore Trophy 220.
This 2015 Clio Trophy follows a prestigious line of Renaultsport Trophy models including the 2005 Clio 182 Trophy.
Due to go on sale in summer 2015, the main changes on the Clio Trophy 220 are an increased power output, up 20bhp to 220bhp, a larger turbo, new air intake and exhaust system and a new Trophy chassis which is 20mm lower at the front, 10mm lower at the rear and 40% stiffer.
The Clio Trophy 220 also features a quicker steering rack, Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and a stop start system which reduces CO2 output by 6g/km to 138g/km.
The biggest improvement though is the gearbox, which came in for much criticism. The 2015 Clio Trophy is still only available with an EDC paddleshift transmission but Renault claims that shifts are 40% faster in Normal and Sport mode and 50% faster in Race mode. There is also a 30% reduction in travel length for the steering wheel mounted shift paddles for more immediate gear changes and revised software and a raised rev limiter which will allow earlier downchanges.
Visual changes include a new matte white paint and gloss black roof and rear spoiler, Trophy badging and a Trophy interior pack which includes heated leather seats and carbon-effect inserts.
The Renaultsport Clio Trophy 220 will go on sale in June 2015. No prices have yet been announced but expect to pay a significant premium over the standard Clio RS.
