THE BBC HAS announced that Jeremy Clarkson’s replacement on Top Gear will be presenter and petrolhead, Chris Evans.

After an incident with a producer that taught 90% of the population about the existence of the word ‘fracas’, the BBC has been deciding what to do with its most profitable product, Top Gear.

Having not renewed Clarkson’s contract, and with James May and Richard Hammond not willing to continue without him, the BBC needed to fill the presenting line-up. Internet and press speculation has been rife but the wait is finally over as Chris Evans has been announced as new lead presenter.

Evans said, “I’m thrilled, Top Gear is my favourite programme of all time. Created by a host of brilliant minds who love cars and understand how to make the massively complicated come across as fun, devil-may-care and effortless. When in fact, of course, it’s anything but and that’s the genius of Top Gear’s global success. I promise I will do everything I possibly can to respect what has gone on before and take the show forward.”

Kim Shillinglaw, controller of BBC Two, said, “I’m so delighted that Chris will be presenting the next series of Top Gear. His knowledge of and passion for cars is well-known, and combined with his sheer inventiveness and cheeky unpredictability he is the perfect choice to take our much-loved show into the future.”

Could Jason Plato join Chris Evans hosting BBC Top Gear?

So what about the rest of the line-up? Well there’s nothing official yet, but BTCC driver and Fifth Gear presenter Jason Plato is good mates with Evans and is believed to have already worked on a one-off special Top Gear episode with him featuring an epic LaFerrari, Porsche 918, McLaren P1 shootout.

Whoever the BBC chooses, we won’t have to wait long to find out as there is confirmation that production for the next series of Top Gear “will start in the next few weeks”.

As for Clarkson, May and Hammond, they are currently touring the world with their live show and are rumoured to be close to signing a deal with Netflix to make a new car show. Exciting times are ahead for car TV shows, that’s for sure.
