Renault’s new Golf and Focus rival has finally broken cover as official pictures are released of the 2016 Megane.

This fourth generation Megane comes 20 years after the MK1 was launched and is the latest model to adopt the new Renault family ‘face’, with large grille, larger diamond badge and heavily stylised wraparound headlights.

In an increasingly bland yet lucrative segment, Renault has created a 25mm lower and 47mm wider car than the outgoing Megane in an attempt to create a “sporty” and more muscular look. When you’re up against the titans of the segment, the VW Golf, Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, you certainly need to do something different to attract attention and sales, and the various creases, ‘muscle’ lines and rising waistline certainly do that.

The blue car pictured is the GT model, a warm hatch that sits between the regular models and the hot Renaultsport model which has yet to be announced.

The GT model gets a more aggressive front bumper, twin exhausts, rear spoiler and 18-inch alloy wheels.

More technical details will be announced at the Frankfurt motorshow, but the news we’re most eagerly awaiting is that of the Renaultsport version. The Megane has been top of the hot hatch tree for several generations now and with Ford, VW and Honda upping their game, the next-gen RS Megane should be something very special indeed!
